About the Nether Edge site
The Nether Edge Development (built by Gleeson Homes) is situated in a conservation area on the site of the old Nether Edge Hospital and is bounded by Osborne Road, Lyndhurst Road, Union Road and the Michael Carlisle Centre. There are 187 dwellings in a mixture of individual new build houses, new build apartment blocks and refurbished hospital buildings, with apartments out-numbering houses by around two to one. The complex also has a Leisure Suite comprising pool, sauna, spa, gym and function room for the use of residents and their guests.
The whole development has been constructed using Yorkshire stone and slate pitched roofs. The Kingswood building is Grade 2 listed and is surrounded by further blocks all of Victorian/Edwardian origin which have been converted and refurbished (Alexandra, Cliffe, Edward, Muxlow, Peveril, Victoria, Sharrow and Osborne Walk cottages). The new build accommodation (including Apartment Blocks Sheaf 1, 2 and 3 and houses in Alexandra Gardens) has been constructed in keeping with the original architecture. The Leisure Suite is located on the two lower floors of Sheaf 1.
